Sweeping madness

I was doing some cooking when suddenly I heard some noise coming from upstairs, my neighbours moving or doing something on the balcony..(now don't start thinking of any thing huh..hahah)

Usually I won't really care until I heard a glass breaking sound..I walked near to the balcony and heard sweeping sound from above, all of a sudden, cigarettes butts and a piece of glass (green-like similar to those beer bottles glass) came 'flying' down onto our balcony!

Immediately, I started to shout "EXCUSE ME! YOU ARE SWEEPING GLASS DOWN TO OUR BALCONY BELOW AND THOSE GLASS BROKE!" I think the neighbour heard what I SCREAMED and stopped sweeping. They didn't even say sorry or whatever..so rude and inconsiderate. What made them think that what they don't want on their balcony, me, their neighbour below, will want them?? It stopped for a while and the sweeping began again, this time other debris (not glass) came down. Since its not 'dangerous items' I didn't YELL..

If I'm mean, I will pick up the cigarette butts and broken glass and bring it upstairs to them. (They thought I wont know who they are? They are just directly above us, for goodness sake)

Wonder if they are testing my patience or what..ARGHHHH

Buffet thoughts...

Do you ever wonder how some people can pile their food to the tops while there are others in queue waiting to get that dish at buffets?

"The One" and I went to an Asian lunch buffet and was in the queue to get some steam fish. A Mother and her daughter were infront of me, speaking in Chinese, the mother told her daughter "get the fish, must take at least half"..When I heard what she told her gal, I was like "WHAT? take HALF??" what about the people still queueing behind ar? My God" The little gal who should be around 10 or 11, didn't want to take that much, but her Mother took till almost half the fish was gone from the tray and onto her gal's plate. I look at the little gal and her plate of 'half fish', her face turned red like tomato and kept telling the mother, 'enough enough' but the mom isn't listening. When they are done, the little gal immediately walked away so quickly as if Me, the tigress is going to eat her up or what..

Sigh..how come some people just must make their kids feel so paiseh (embarrassed)? Can always make a 2nd or 3rd trip back to get more, isn't it? Not as if the fish once gone, there wont be any more..

Is it mostly the Asians who are like that? I don't recall seeing any of the whites do that, at least in my own experiences..how come like that? hmmm..What went wrong?

Volunteering at Toronto Island park

"The One" and I went to do volunteer work..yup volunteering to do some planting at the Toronto island sand dune. We reckon since its his off day, we might as well take the time off to do some good, volunteer and at the same time 'earn' a free ferry trip to the island :)

There were about 15 of us and guess what? Only "The One" and I with another pair of young couple are asian..The rest, are whites :P I think they are really surprised to see us (asians doing volunteering they must be wondering...)

"The One" and I had a fun time digging and planting wild flowers in the sand dunes..except the dried thorns of a plant really pricked us..Ouchy! but nevertheless, it turned out to be a wonderful day. We roam around the island in the afternoon after the volunteering work is done. Had a little pinic, walked about the island, came to a little 'theme park' on the island (sorta like a little disneyland thingy)..

At the end of the day, we are tired and our muscles were aching, but this is one little island that we will be visiting again..till then..its off to dreamland! Both of us are 'knocking out' soon!

Summer, Winter all in Spring! This is Canada in May

Few weeks back, "The One" and I were enjoying the cool Spring weather, having our breakfast on our balcony; enjoying the nice warmth of the sun and chirping of the birds..and Yesterday??
I was rolling up my sleeves, rolling up my pants, fanning myself crazy during the day!

It was official, Yesterday temp of 31oC broke the record high set in 1991 of 30.5oC in Ontario. Smog advisory alert continues on record hot day and Toronto Public Health issued a heat alert Thursday morning, saying more severe, long-lasting high temperatures could increase the number of weather-related deaths.

However...It was a totally different story in Calgary. It was actually SNOWING! Yes, you seen it right, SNOWING in Calgary...Calgary hit with snow, Ontario basking in the sun. Can you imagine, in Spring, one state is experiencing "Winter" while another is experiencing "Summer"

When I was in Melbourne, people in Melbourne told me , "You can experience 4 seasons in a day", I was like "huh?" The rain, wind, sun, dry...but here in Canada? I can only say, it is really literally the SEASONS that you are experiencing! I guess the weather forecasters were all 'blown' away when they 'forecast' the weather yesterday..

Ashbridge Bay Fireworks Toronto May 21 2007

Firework on Queen Victoria Day 210507

21st May was Queen Victoria Day, it was a holiday and "The One" was off from work. We decided to go out for a night out to watch some firework at the "Ashbridge bay park" near the lake where there will be fireworks...

Fireworks will start at 9.45pm so we decided to go out a little earlier, have dinner before going. When we reached the park, around 8pm, my god! The park was packed with people. Some had been there since early day to do some pinicing, bbqing, enjoying the nice weather..the car park was full and we had to circle round the parking lots for a whole 1 hour plus! In the end, we couldn't get a lot in the park parking, we had to park a short distance away near some shopping area and walk in to the park.

The firework was nice, the atmosphere was great...we took some photos of the firework and a short video of the firework. Wish our friends and family were here to enjoy this with us..although you guys can't be here, hope you enjoy the pics and video as much as we did..

p/s The video is on the next post :P

Delicious Salt Baked Chicken

Compared with any method of cooking, I love baking..Not cakes though as baking a cake really means you hv to follow the recipe to a "T", too little, too much and your cake will 'go flat'. What I mean by baking is say..'baking fish, chicken, pork.." sorta stuffs. Where a little too much of these or that wont make your food a total diaster (at least thats what I hope) hehe..Plus the fact that baking is 'healthier' with less oil, not too greasy and while I bake one dish in the oven, I can be stir frying another dish on the stove. Save time, multi tasking :)

So today..I feel like having "salt baked chicken". I'm not the best at cooking, but give me a "PREMIX" and I'm sure I'm good at following instruction and my instinct :)

I used "Seah's Salt Roasted Chicken Spice Powder" for the chicken. (although it said 'roasted' but I figured since I'm using the oven to bake, i'll call mine baked chicken ;)) "Seah's" has a number of nice premix and none has 'failed' me when I tried them so far..:) Highly recommended

On the left, Thats the "BEFORE" photo of my deliciously looking salt baked chicken (I used a bone in Chicken Breast instead of a whole chicken) and on the right, thats the "AFTER" photo of the chicken when we 'tear it apart'..now dont be mistaken as to why we didnt finish that chicken, thats because "The One" and I are saving it for our dinner! hahahah..cant bear to finish it at one go. "The One" give this a BIG THUMBS UP! and me..of course, ahem, I'm the chef, aint I? hahahaha Ok ok, no self praising here, its the credit of the "Seah's" premix :) Try it, you wont be disappointed, thats for sure :)

Precious broccoli

I love broccoli and esp since its one of those vegs that has precious anti cancer properties. How do you prepare your broccoli? Do you boil your broccoli?? if you do, PLEASE DON'T!

As you guys know, broccoli are VERY hard, so I tend to boil it for like 5-10 mins to make it soft. After reading this, its no more boiling, the next time I'm making my broccoli? Steaming it. As for those broccoli that I hv eaten in the past..aiya..so wasted...Well, not too late, there's still HOPE hehehe

Do you know the difference between fruits and vegs?

"The One" and I were hving lunch and hving small talks when the topic of "whats the difference between fruits and vegetables?" were brought up..

"The One" mentioned that his teacher told him, 'anything with seeds is fruits and anything without is vegs", I seriously do not remember what my teacher said about fruits and vegs (see how 'good' a student i'm? hehehe) and we went into questionings each others with..

"what about cucumber? egg plants? tomatoes?" are they fruits or vegs? I told "The One", might be its the difference in Vit C content that makes it fruits? Since Fruits hv high Vit C content? but think of brussel sprouts? (they hv high Vit C content but are they fruits??)...so after some "good thinking cap discussion", we decided to turn to the internet to google some info. This is what we found...

Difference between fruits and Vegetables

".....The answer depends on who you are: a scientist? a greengrocer? I'll give you the botanist's answer:A fruit is the ripened (swollen) ovary of a flower. The ovary ripens when the ovules inside have been fertilized. Seeds of flowering plants always are found inside fruits. Botanists generally don't use the word vegetable to mean a plant or even a plant part. The basic parts are roots, stems, leaves flowers/fruit/seeds. Vegetable is a grocery store term: Tomatoes are called vegetables to distinguish them from the sweeter fruits like peaches. Carrots are called vegetables but the part we eat is of course a root. ...." - Taken from http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/teach/msg011956409905.html answered by Cathy

"A fruit is actually the sweet, ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant. A vegetable, in contrast, is an herbaceous plant cultivated for an edible part (seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet fruits). So, to be really nitpicky, a fruit could be a vegetable, but a vegetable could not be a fruit." - Taken from http://ask.yahoo.com/20010411.html

Depend on who you are, the words meant a little difference. However, it is not based on simple term of 'anything with seeds are fruits and anything without are vegetables' or the 'theory' of Vit C content...so there u go, I hope you learnt something new today, Just as "The One" and I did :)

I feel good...

I felt good today because "The One" and I did something good. Remember the little boy, Shane who has cancer that I blogged about some time back, his birthday wish this year is to get 350 million birthday cards before May 30th (his birthday) to break the world record for the most number of birthday cards received? We went to get him a birthday card and posted it to him. It feels good if we are able to be part of his 'wish come true'...so hopefully Shane will get his wish come true..

have you send Shane a birthday card yet?

Spiderman3 - Weekend box office record $148 million, we were part of it

Spiderman3 finally opens on last Friday in Canada.."The One" and I went to catch the afternoon show of Spi 3. Even before the first showtime at 11.30am, infront of the cinema were groups of teenagers waiting outside (I suppose wanting to be the first ones to catch Spi3) geee..on a Friday morning, don't they have to go to school??

The whole day, the cinema was packed, the cinema was a multi plex and if I'm not wrong, at least 5/6 halls were running Spi3 on one day, timing of the movies was like 30 mins interval. As the seats were free sitting, "The One" and I went in 3o mins earlier (I know, I know..I'm the more kaisu type, but I don't wanna end up sitting in the front rows, having to endure a neck ache at the end of the show)

The show started on time, initially it was pretty good, esp with the new evils: sandman and venom. I think Spi3 was based more on the 'romance' rather than really Spi with the evils..

My Favourite part? one memorable scene was when Peter Parker and MJ were sharing a night under the stars romancing on the BIG spiderweb *dreamy eyes*. (click on that box to see the scene) and as usual, the captivating 'swings' of spi and the main moral of 'With great power, comes great responsibility'. The fighting scenes were well done but there were scenes when suddenly I do not know if Spiderman is really a superhero who's so invincible? or he's just human? He can get injured, cuts just like any human being and then there were scenes when he was being thrown against the moving train and yet not getting injured at all..It all seems so contradicting..

As time goes by, it got draggy. My bums were sore, I was getting irritated...At some point, even before the show ends, some guys were leaving the cinema. My verdict of the show? Critics have termed this as the BEST of the TRIOLOGY, I'm saying "huh, no way, i rather re-watched the 1st or the 2nd spiderman rather than this." Well, "The One" had a different view, he enjoyed this Spiderman3 and of course, he being the 'evilish one' liked "VENOM" even before we watched this Spiderman3..see how evilish he is? hahhaha (that's one of "The One" fav pic of Venom)

its really Spring

it finally feel like SPRING without the -Ter (if you guys had followed my blog, u will know "The One" gave winter in Spring a new name "Spring-ter" hahaha)

The seagulls and sparrows are finally flying around, trees are starting to bud, ground is finally grown with grass..soon the trees infront of our bedroom will be full of leaves that we wont be able to see whats on the other side of the road..

The other day, the weather was really good, "The One" and I even had breakfast on our balcony (we took the chair and coffee table out and had tea with you tiao). We decided to take a train to Chinatown instead of driving (downtown parking is too expensive and he can take a break from driving too and be the 'driven one' ;)) it was rather crowded considering it being a weekday, some people were out in shorts and tshirts, eating ice-creams, having cold drinks, beers, sitting on the sidewalk of cafes, rolling up their pants and just basically enjoying the warm sunshine..I suppose this is the 'nicest' season of all the seasons (not too hot, not too cold with warm sunshine...) Im sure my Daddy will love this time of the year...perhaps next time when we have a house, with garden and back yard, he can do the lawn and pull weeds hehehe..

hopefully the weather will be just as nice for a 'long time' as long as spring season is here..keeping fingers crossed!
