Durian Durian...
"The One" and I was at an Asian supermarket and they were having this 'thailand fruit festival'..of course there were all the favourites Thai fruits, one of which is the King of the fruits, Durian!
As we were walking down the lane, "The One" and I had this conversation about durian...
Me: You know, durians are known as king of the fruits?
"The One": Yeah?
Me: Yeah, and mangosteen are known as queen of the fruits.
"The One" : yeah? hmm...then durians shouldn't be king of the fruits, Mango should be the king of the fruits!
I looked at "The One" and laughed..oh yeah huh..why isn't mango the king of the fruits?
The durians were selling at $0.88/lb, "The One" has never tried Durian before, so I asked "The One", 'will you want to try durian?' He was like, 'Sure, why not?' *happy me* hehehe We picked a smaller durian (incase he didn't like it), and that cost us like $6, pretty reasonable considered they 'sat on an airplane to be here'!
When we reached home, we proceed to 'dissect' our durian. Man! It wasn't easy I have to say! It wasn't as easy as those professional durian Uncles back home who open the durian in like 2 seconds flat..we had to use the cleaver and after using 'nine cow two tiger strength' did we managed to open it hehehe
After opening it did I realised there's a little tag that said, "Frozen Durian" hahaha no wonder it was so difficult to open..(At the supermarket, It wasn't kept in the freezer, it was just left in the boxes). The fruit itself, was a little fozen, taste just like eating durian ice-cream. :) "The One" had one seed, he didn't really hate it nor love it..he's like 'Ok, one will do for me..' hehehe I ate like 3 seeds and 'tabao' another 3 seeds in the tupperware to slowly savour later...I suppose "The One" still prefer his version of king of the fruits - Mango rather than my version hahaha
Cheerios and keep smiling!

haha
I have trouble opening the durian too
Thus I usually ask the seller to open it up nicely before I bring it home
LOL, yenjai is smart.
It's actually quite fun trying to find that point where you can split the durian.
Hi Winnie,
My late dad taught me how to pry open durians at the seams. I am good at that but I have no strength to do the pulling, that I need hubby. Hubby can't do the seams so eating durian at home has to be a team effort lah..ha ha. But Winnie, duh..the bau (pong) lingers so long after that. What to do, the 20 minutes of pleasure's worth it..ha ha! Cheers.
Hi Winnie,
Next time you want to open a durian, apart from making sure its 'unfrozen' first, ha ha, use a big screwdriver. And I mean the at least 1' long one, make sure its a strong one too.
Hold a piece of thick cloth or old towel, poke the tip of the screwdriver at the bottom or (x'cuse me here) backside of the durian, you know..where you can see the lines joined into a very small kind of circle, insert the screwdriver and pry it open.
Suggest you not try it as requires abit of strength so get your 007 to open it.
Much easier this way.
Glad you enjoyed the Yau Kee won ton noodles. It is delicious, huh?
Okay, you go try the Banana leaf takeaway shop I mentioned before. Owner can speak Malay.
By the way, you know about Gourmet garden at Shepherd near Brimley? The Malaysian foodstall?
Have a nice day Winnie, UL.
hehehe yenjai bro, not that I dont want to..over here, no professional durian Uncles to help us do that :P
Jonzz, yeah it was 'fun' only for the first time lah..(i suspect hubby thinks I'm crazy to want to eat something that needs that much strength to open!) hahaha
Hi Ruby, my ah gong and daddy both very good at opening durians; so when I'm home, I never have to worry about opening, just enjoy the eating part :P
oh yeah i do 100% agree, its a team effort! I was giving instructions, 'ok huh, hold here, ok huh, i count 1,2,3 u pull that, i pull here okie' and definitely without hubby's MUSCULAR strength, I think I'll not hv durians hehehe
that heavenly smell is sooo nice, definitely worth the effort...You're right on Ruby, 20 mins, thats how long we took to open that little babe!
you have a great day!
hehehe Uncle Lee, thanks for that 'look out for unfrozen sign' warning first :P and oh, thats the first time I heard before, to use a big screwdriver to poke the backside hahaha We definitely use more than one cloth, we used 3! :P
but I wonder if my 007 will want to open another durian again hehehe
Yeah Uncle Lee, that wanton noodles is delicious! Thank u for telling us :) hmm, I didnt think I get the location of that Banana leaf takeaway shop that you mentioned before, mind telling me again? Sorri huh, me got short memory. "Owner can speak Malay" hmm...but I dont Uncle Lee :)
Gourmet Garden at Shepherd near Brimley? Nope, havent heard of before, what sorta nice food do they serve?
You have a nice day too Uncle Lee!
I love durians, mangosteens, mangoes, longans, lychees :)
Amazing that they sell durians in Canada.
Hi Winnie, okay re 'Banana Leaf Takeaway'...the shop is on Shepherd between Kennedy and Midland.
If coming from Midland, you make a right, go West on Shepherd, about 5 lamp posts (I think) you pass railway tracks across road, you will see GO Train car park, huge car park on right side. Next to it, small side road, its first shop, facing Shepherd, you won't miss it. Green signboard with a banana leaf logo.
Its selling what you get in Singapore...pending what you include, about $5 upwards to $6. Actually one box takeaway is enough for two persons.
Winnie, you must go try this China Yunnan dish called, "Cross bridge Rice noodles".
You know that Medical centre with mall on Finch, just before Kennedy? Address of Medical centre facing road is 40/40. Make a right, then right to enter parking.
Go in you'll find Chung Hing market in the corner,(we do our groceries there often)..
Okay, there is a big Chinese restaurant, newly renovated, next to it you will see a Chinese Boutique named "8 Inches". I am still wondering why the boutique is called "8 inches", hmmm, too shy to ask, ha ha. My wife once blue moon will get a dress there.
Anyway...go inside the mall
walk right to the end, you will see Yunnan Restaurant.
It is unique here...and owners cannot speak English, only Mandarin, but menu in two lingos.
Order their "cross bridge rice noodles" as well they have a cold dish noodles..
Winnie, it will be totally different to Shanghai, HK or other Chinese dishes. Try it. Price okay.
Oh ya, that restaurant in the centre of mall two shops away from 'Yunnan' is not bad. But try Yunnan, you'll enjoy the unusual noodles, very delicious.
Will tell you about "gourmet Garden" (Malaysian/Singapore foodstall) next..Try this two first. UL.
ps, let me know, okay?
*Hi5 poohbearee* Me too! :)
oh yeah, you can find longans, lychees, mango here too...although I havent really seen mangosteen though..even the canned ones.
The Asian businessman here in Toronto are VERY smart, they really do their market research well. Since alot of immigrants from Canada are asians, they never missed the chance to earn money :)
I cannot remember when was the last time I had to struggle opening a durian myself. Each time I went home on holiday, I would buy the packed ones in the supermarket.
When I was living on the other side of Germany, I used to frequent a tiny Asian shop to get frozen durians packed in plastic containers. It was good while it lasted. :)
okie Uncle Lee, thanks for the directions to the 'Banana Leaf Takeaway'.
Oh, that "Cross bridge Rice noodles", I tried once before! Can't remember the taste now but the food was pretty good. Went there with my parents when they were here to attend our ROM last year :) That place is "Milliken Mall" or is it "Milliken Square" but its at Milliken right? We do our shopping there at Chung Hing very often too Uncle Lee! hahaha
The Yunnan Resturant is run by Taiwanese I guess...They even show Taiwanese shows when we were there the last time :)
have a great day Uncle Lee.
j.t. frozen ones just have to do isnt it..when theres a craving hehe :)
I missed those fresh, ready open ready to eat durians back home too..Daddy and the Durian Uncles will pick the yummy durians, they will open and pack it straight into the boxes and we'll slowly slowly enjoy the durians at home. Sometimes daddy will just ask the Durian Uncles to open just enough that it will be easy to open..once I tried to open it by myself, the durian almost fly away! lucky never hit anyone hahahaha
Haha Winnie,
Durian: Hard on the outside, but soft on the inside...
Great way to describe a person ;)
Just conveniently forget the smelly part! *Giggles*
haha daphne..describing anyone in particular? *wink wink*
stinky smell..u remind me of my kiddo bro! whenever we have durian..he will be the first to fly away coz he cant stand the smell! hahaha
how are u feeling? better?
