To change or not to change...

Sometime back, "The One" and I went for a burger at a fast food outlet. After getting our order, we sat down to enjoy our crispy burger, when we took a bite..arhhh..the meat was cool. "The One" looked at me and said, "is yours fresh?" I looked at him and shake my head, "Not crunchy one"...He wrapped up his burger and tell me, "Give me urs, I'll go and ask them to give us freshly made ones". I told him, "hmm, its ok lah" He said its not ok, so I wrapped it up and handed him the burger.

After about 5 mins, "The One" came back with the freshly made burgers. Once u open up the wrapper, u can see the heat steam coming out from the meat and when u bite into it, 'crunchy crunchy' :) So I asked "The One" what happened? "Nothing, I just went there and told the cashier this is not fresh. No questions asked, she just turned to her colleague in the kitchen and told him, "You don't make fresh ones?" Threw the burger away, handed me these and said sorry for that" I looked at him and said, "oh, ok"

At the end of the meal, I was thinking to myself...I do understand the need to stand up for your rights. As in, you paid for a meal, and of course u should get fresh food. However when I think of that burger that was thrown away just becoz its not 'fresh' anymore (past their freshness by probably 15-20 mins) ; if that was given to a child in the third world country, he will have gobble it up as if he has found gold...

Such is the irony in this world...

Hi Winnie, re your burger experience, you should see the other fast food places...the food they throw away once 'cold' or too long standing.
Even at those big outlets.
You know why?
They afraid get sued big time if food cold, get tummy ache or something.
Couple of years back a lady sued McDonalds $1 million, as the coffee she bought spilled on her thighs while she driving. Burnt her thighs.
She sued McDonalds for making the coffee too hot! Can you beat that!
And the gila judge awarded her the money!
A friend's son works for a fast food and he too very sayang have to throw away 'cold food'...but he was warned against taking them home or giving to anyone. Incase get sued big time, 'food too cold'!
Welcome to Canada! Ha ha. UL.

Yeah, the homeless and the poor would be happy to get the food people throw away.

Btw, the burger in the picture... waaah... if I open my mouth trying to get a bite of a burger even half that size, I think I may get locked jaw lah... :)

Hi Winnie

I was going to say the same thing that U.Lee mentioned - fast food joints do throw away lots of 'cold' food. My brother used to work in one and told me of the waste.

When I heard that, I thought of the many poor and hungry children/families who could benefit from that. Such a waste. They do that to keep up with standards (and avoid being sued). Then again, if these places did that, they will be chastised for donating "bad" food. After all, what is not suited for human consumption should remain inedible to everyone.

Hi Winnie,

Ya, those fastfood outlets...I have seen them throwing away the food....very sayang also lar. They do that with stale food because scared of being sued big time and also to keep their image that they serve only the freshest of the freshest.

As for some of the bakeries, they will pack those leftover breads and buns and then deliver it to a children's home for supper or breakfast.

Talking about 'not-too-fresh' burgers, I had one when I was flying on one of the domestic airlines in US. The bun was cold the patty was like cow hide like that. I sank my teeth onto the burger and the patty flew onto the floor. Adoi...so malu.

hmm mr whacko, yeah probably, at least they are finally getting one 'nutritious' meal! which i can definitely do without :P

Yup Uncle Lee, its true that food companies are really afraid of getting sued by consumers..and regarding that GILA judge, it is sad to know that we are to TRUST these very people who are supposed to make WISE decisions! what is the system coming too? Has this been a case of more serious crime, gee..i cant imagine how horrible that will be to be wrongly sentenced!

winniethepooh said...

Pi Bani, ure right, they will be so happy to get those food. Just reheat it again and it will be treasures for them.

You know what? That pic, that is really the burger that is served in a burger restaurant in USA with waitress all dressed up like playboy bunnie! I guess it will hv taken me at least one week every meal to finish that burger! at the end of the week, i'll probably never eat another burger for the rest of my life..hmm...

winniethepooh said...

j.t. i agree with u that its such a waste. However, the 'cold' burger that past their freshness by just 10-15 mins, its definitely not inedible. Sometimes when I cant finished a burger, i'll take the other half home, put it in the fridge and probably reheat it and finished it up later in the day after a few hours.

winniethepooh said...

yeah nyonyapenang, very sayang..remember mummy always say, "money hard to earn, food cannot waste huh! all rice hv to finished if not next time get a ugly husband" hehehe

hmm..wonder is there a better way of inventory control for these fast food companies. That will save them money and definitely stop wasting food!

With regards to those buns, i heard of those too. Once mummy's friend used to work in a bakery. At the end of the day, the nice auntie will give us some buns that the store didnt finished selling for that day too. For some time we do get to try new flavoured buns too..yummy :)

opps..fly away patty..i guess the flight attendent definitely get the 'hint' that its too hard! did they get u a new one?

YEah I noticed that the fast food joint will throw away their burgers after a certain period of time as it is not "fresh" anymore.....

Jonzz said...

But the thing is they chose to prepare food that way. And we still have a choice whether to eat there or not.

Circumstances. It would be good not to waste. But why pay good money for stale food?

I feel it is right to stand up for your rights :)

winniethepooh said...

yes sbanboy, its the practice in fast food outlets all over i suppose

winniethepooh said...

yes jonzz, i do understand thats how they prepare the food but is there a better way to control so as not to waste food?

i do agree, why waste money on 'stale' food when u can hv fresh ones. Just feeling sayang for those food thats thrown..as i say irony of life

Hi Winnie, do you like to eat Indian Samosas?
One of the nicest ones is very near to you.
Go East on Finch, past McCowan...past Sandhurst circle, next lights, make a left...can see on the right hand corner, "Embassy restaurant". Make a right into the small road, make a right again and find a parking spot. You will find the Indian restaurant cum Takeaway at the end corner. "Embassy...". Inside you will see all kinds of delicious Indian food.
Their vegetable samosas cost $1.00 for 5 pieces. Yes, you read me correct, $1 for 5 pcs.
But I warn you, you'll be addicted to it.
We gave some to our White friends here and now they go themselves to buy, even for X'mas or their home parties.
Let me know if you go, UL.

winniethepooh said...

Is that the "samosa king" that ure talking about Uncle Lee? oh yes, We do go there once a while to get the samosa and the sweets desserts. my 007 love those and the chutneys there, yummy. Next to this samosa king, there is an indian gorcery. We go there often to get indian/pakistani premix. We usually get the "Shan" brand. They hv nice chicken tikki, briyani (sindi/bombay/chicken), spicy fish seasoning. Its easy for me to make and 007 say taste good hehe They hv nice pratas too (get the curry leaf brand, original, its $1.99 for 5 pieces) and if u hvent try the Rusmalai (its a pakistani sweet dessert make of milk, pistachio, yoghurt) that is yummmy! :) let me know if u do try those yeah!

Wow, are you actually taking the burger shown in the picture... could not imagine how you eat it :-p I think the Fast Food Chain has no choice but to throw away the burger after some period of time because of their policy of providing fresh burger.

Is there a Burger Factory in Toronto? I missed the Burger Factory in Winnipeg... they make nice, huge and fresh burgers (Not as huge as what shown in the picture lah). Yummy! Drool... :-d

feel sayang also hoh seeing them throwing away the burger ..

Hi Winnie,

Wow! What a burger that one? I agree with Pi, the mouth will jam up trying to get a mouthful of that..ha ha.

Wastage is rampant everywhere. It is rather ironic but yeah giants like McDonald would not risk problems with the general public. It could be too costly to them. Cheers.

winniethepooh said...

that burger does look mouth watering isnt it trueblue! :P hope that you are a little more relaxed now. Selamat Berpuasa!

winniethepooh said...

tz hahah no lah, I think my mouth can only open up to the 3 layer..the rest, forget it! However, this pic is taken from a website and that burger, it is really served in a resturant in USA as I mentioned to Pi Bani earlier :) hmm..a burger factory? none that I heard of, what do u do that? they make on the spot customise flavour burger for u? must be really interesting

winniethepooh said...

yeah lor chen, I also think very sayang too..if only the big fast food chain somehow come up with a better system of making their burgers, then it wont be a waste isnt it? hmmm...if can think of a good solution, will write to them, might be they can give me a job even! hahaha

winniethepooh said...

hahaha Ruby, dont worry, if ever eat that BIGG burger..i will give, 3 layer to u, 3 layer to pi Bani, 3 layers to j.t., 3 layers to Uncle Lee, 3 layers to mr whacko, 3 layers to nyonya, 3 layers to jonzz, 3 layers to trueblue, 3 layers to tz, 3 layers to sbanboy, 3 layers to chen, 3 layers to poohbearee..hmm..enough or not? where's mine huh? hahaha well, another one pls! :P im sure we definitely wont waste food :))

yup Ruby, like what Uncle Lee said, they can get sued even for making HOT coffee! Duhhhh...if they let their burger get 'cold' might be will "freeze" someone's tongue, another 1 million gone? :P
